Tax systems to satisfy — handled by one team
The problem

Two tax systems shouldn't mean two firms.

The US taxes its citizens and green-card holders on their worldwide income, wherever they live. So even after years in the UK, paying HMRC, you're generally still required to file a US federal return every year.

And the work falls in the gap between two systems. Your UK accountant can't touch your US return. Your US preparer doesn't understand your UK pension, ISA or PAYE salary. The penalties for botching the foreign-account reporting are genuinely frightening.

You need one team that handles both sides at once — so the treaty and foreign tax credits are claimed properly, and nothing falls through the middle.

Questions

US expat tax, answered.

Do I really have to file a US return if I live in the UK and already pay UK tax?
In most cases, yes. The US taxes citizens and green-card holders on worldwide income regardless of where they live. The treaty, the Foreign Tax Credit and the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion usually mean you owe little or no extra US tax — but the requirement to file still stands.
When is my US tax return due if I live abroad?
If you live outside the US you get an automatic extension to file to 15 June rather than 15 April. You can extend further to 15 October with Form 4868, and a final discretionary extension to mid-December can be requested. Any tax owed is still due by 15 April to avoid interest. The FBAR is due 15 April with an automatic extension to 15 October.
What is the FBAR, and do I need to file one?
The FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) reports your foreign financial accounts. You generally need to file it if the combined balance of your non-US accounts went over US$10,000 at any point during the year — even briefly. It's filed separately from your tax return, and the penalties for not filing can be severe.
Will I end up being taxed twice?
Usually not. Between the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, the Foreign Tax Credit and the US–UK treaty, most people avoid double taxation. The skill is in choosing the right combination for your circumstances, which is exactly what we model for you.
I haven't filed for years — am I in trouble?
Often this is fixable without penalties. The IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures let eligible taxpayers whose failure to file was non-willful get up to date by submitting recent returns and FBARs. We assess whether you qualify and manage the catch-up.
Are my UK ISA and pension a problem for US tax?
They need careful handling. An ISA is not tax-free in US eyes, and funds in a stocks-and-shares ISA can fall under the passive foreign investment company (PFIC) rules, which require extra reporting (Form 8621). UK pensions need treaty-based treatment.
